Why did you become a Direct Support Professional (DSP)?
I started because it was the "family business." I loved visiting my mom and aunts at work. Everyone was so kind and friendly, I fell in love.
How would you describe your job? What do you do in a "typical" day?
I coordinate services for people served in our Group Employment ADS (Adult Day Services) and HPC (Homemaker Personal Care) sites and oversee those doing direct support. I also connect with families, guardians and local businesses.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy seeing the look on the faces of the people we serve when they master a new skill or when they are excited to move into employment.
If someone is considering becoming a DSP, what would you tell him/her?
It's the most rewarding job; to see people's faces light up when they see you or when you can something happen for them. It may be challenging some days, but there is something to smile about every day!
